Our Rich History

A timeless tradition woven into Campbell River for generations

The story of Ideal Cafe stretches back to the 1940s, although the exact year has become part of the mystery and charm of the café itself. Some stories say 1943, others say 1947, which is why you’ll often notice a question mark beside the date on our merchandise and branding.

Originally established as a small coffee shop in the very same location it still calls home today, the Ideal has been woven into the history of Campbell River for generations. Over the decades, the building has evolved alongside the town itself. Local stories tell of the café once being two separate buildings that were eventually joined together. Through the years, neighbouring spaces have housed everything from a post office and convenience store and even a laundromat.

By the 1980s, the space had transformed into the full restaurant locals know and love today, a welcoming roadside stop famous for hearty meals, friendly service, and generous portions. For decades, the Ideal became a familiar landmark for truckers, travellers, fishermen, and Campbell River families alike.

"The two first met at the Ideal Café while Lloyd was working across the road at Raven Lumber, long before life eventually brought them together years later. Little did they know that one day they would own the very place where their story first began."

In 2011, the café was purchased by the Bergen family, Lloyd and Audrey Bergen, alongside their daughter Stephanie. But their connection to the Ideal actually began many years earlier.

As a teenager, Audrey worked at the café when she was just 16 years old. Around the same time, Lloyd had recently moved to Campbell River and lived across the street in a small group of cabins. The two first met at the Ideal Café while Lloyd was working across the road at Raven Lumber, long before life eventually brought them together years later. Little did they know that one day they would own the very place where their story first began.

Since taking over in 2011, the Bergen family has worked hard to preserve the spirit and nostalgia of the Ideal while continuing to modernize and improve the restaurant. Through ongoing renovations, the café has embraced its classic 1950s diner feel while creating a warm, welcoming clean space for everyone, locals, visitors, families, workers, and travellers alike.

Over the years, Stephanie Bergen gradually took on a larger leadership role within the business, and since 2019 has led the day-to-day operations of the café with support from family and an incredible team behind her.

Today, Ideal Cafe remains proud to serve the community with the same values it has always been known for: good food, big portions, friendly faces, and a place where everyone feels at home.

For many in Campbell River, the Ideal is more than just a restaurant, it’s a local landmark, a piece of history, and a tradition that continues with every cup of coffee served.
